After buying supplies for the orphanage, I still had plenty of money left over. I wanted to impact more lives, so, I bought rice and chicken to feed children living in poverty. After the event, they eat. For most, this was their biggest meal of the week. I have seen true poverty and what it means to be in fear of starvation.
I will never again take a meal for granted. It was a privilege to be able to spend time with the children at the orphanage and the children at Super Kids, essay on service above self, but perhaps the most impactful time for my service was helping with a kindergarten class.
They come from a squatter village over a mile away. The school is based on volunteer teachers. These children would not receive an education otherwise because most schooling has to be payed for. This kindergarten is supported by donations, including uniforms for the children to wear at school and lunch each day. I helped the children with their work, got to know them, eat with them, and played games with them. I taught them how to play duck duck goose.
They loved it! These children have no material wealth, yet they contain true joy. It was truly amazing to see the impact of persistent fundraising and seeing the impact that was made for those in need.
This experience taught me a lot about what it means to truly serve others in need. At the young age of 11, I grasped the concept of service.
